The true story of Gladys Aylward, a housemaid from England turned Christian missionary in China, is about a woman with great courage and determination to serve the Lord . This book was written for readers ages 10 and up. It is specifically designed for the junior high student. This book is one in a series of books for this age group that tells about the Christian missionries called Christian Heroes: Then and Now.
Aylward travels to China despite a lack of knowledge in the Chinese language and culture but her calling and love of God keeps her going along the way. This is the story that has been told countless times in many others books and even the movie, The Inn of the Sixth Happiness was based on Aylward’s story. What separates this book from the others is that it is for the junior high age range but an adult can read this book without being bored or feel the content is too dumbed down. I love that this book is part of a large series of books about Christians. I’m keen on learning and after reading this book, I am ready to learn about another hero.
